Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman

by Thomas Hardy

Children's books · Novel

Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman initially appeared in a censored and serialised version, published by the British illustrated newspaper The Graphic, then in book form in three volumes, and as a single volume. Although now considered a major novel of the 19th century, Tess of the d'Urbervilles received mixed reviews when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the morals of late Victorian England.

The Return of the Native

Romance · Novel

The Return of the Native first appeared in the magazine Belgravia, a publication known for its sensationalism, and was presented in 12 monthly instalments from 9 January to 19 December. Because of the novel's controversial themes, Hardy had some difficulty finding a publisher; reviews, however, though somewhat mixed, were generally positive.
