Douglass’s Narrative is an autobiography of enslavement and escape, written to make Northern readers unable to treat the facts as rumor. The voice is controlled, and the argument is public.
Douglass describes enslavement in Maryland, the fight to read, and his escape. He published the Narrative to answer readers who claimed no one in bondage could have written it.
My Bondage and My Freedom is the second of three autobiographies written by Douglass and is mainly an expansion of his first, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. My Bondage and My Freedom depicts in greater detail his transition from bondage to liberty.
