Charles Reade (1814–1884) is represented here by 3 public-domain titles, including A Perilous Secret, A Terrible Temptation: A Story of To-Day, and Christie Johnstone: A Novel. This page is a shelf list: the books are read on Open Library, not stored here.
Christie Johnstone: A Novel stays with the adventures of the young and wealthy aristocrat Viscount Ipsden in the course of his efforts to relieve the deserving poor of a Scottish fishing village. Christie Johnstone: A Novel is set in Newhaven near Edinburgh and may have been based on the real life experiences of Reade.
A Terrible Temptation: A Story of To-Day first appeared serially in Cassell's Magazine in England from March 4 to August 26, 1871. Similar to 's Griffith Gaunt, the novel received negative reviews in the English press due to its content, which included extramarital relations and a courtesan, but this also helped increase sales of Reade's works in America.
